Prototype Handcycle Wheelchair Conversion

Psychology Volunteers on Bikes in collaboration with Lowriders and Bike Mechanic Brothers’ Llyod and Kevin Posadas made a Prototype Handcycle Wheelchair Conversion for Atoy Codilla. This is a documentation of the process- from consultation with a multidisciplinary team of volunteers: Medical Doctor Dr. Florence Siao, Physical Therapist Miguel Siao, Applied Clinical Psychologist Edna Lee, and bike activists Daryl Mishka Watin and Monica Manluluyo; to the designing process and the customization of the handcycle according to the needs of the PWD beneficiary. The funding of the prototype is from Vilma Lee. In our country very few PWD have efficient mobility on the road because of the lack of appropriate handcycles due to its very high cost which ranges from $2,000 to $3,000 and the lack of true walkable sidewalks and designated bike lanes. However, with this locally made affordable HANDCYCLE prototype PWDs can now have increased efficient and safer mobility in Cebu. PWDs can now move around out city especially if the BIKE LANES ORDINANCE is implemented.
